Sump pump

A pump that hums but doesn't move water, won't start, or runs nonstop needs a look before the next heavy rain or the spring thaw. A battery backup keeps it pumping when the power goes out in a storm.

Water rising in the pit or the basement now? Call for someone who comes out after hours.

Check these first

  1. Power. Is it plugged in? Check the outlet and the breaker.
  2. Float test. Pour a bucket of water into the pit. The pump should start. If it doesn't, the float or the pump has failed.
  3. Discharge pipe. Outside, make sure the pipe isn't frozen, buried or blocked.
