Burst or leaking pipe
Shut the water off first, then call. A burst pipe does a lot of damage fast, and a plumber can't stop it any quicker than your main valve can.
Water still running? Shut off the main valve now, then call a plumber who comes out after hours.

Do this now
- Main water valve. Usually where the water line comes through the basement wall, by the meter. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
- Electricity. If water is near outlets, cords or the panel, stay out of it and call 911 or the electric utility.
- Water heater. If the water will be off a while, set a gas water heater to Pilot or Vacation, or switch off an electric one at the breaker.
- Photos. Take pictures of the damage before you clean up. Your insurance company will want them.
Until the plumber gets there
- Open a faucet on the lowest floor to drain what's left in the pipes.
- Move what you can off wet floors, and mop or vacuum up the water.
- Call your insurance company if there's real damage.
