Frozen pipes
If some faucets stopped during a cold snap, a pipe has probably frozen, usually on an outside wall or in a crawl space. Thawing it slowly can save it. A split pipe needs a plumber.
See water, or a split in the pipe? Shut off the main valve and call now.

Do this now
- Open the faucet. Leave the frozen faucet open, so water can run once it thaws.
- Warm it gently. A hair dryer, a heating pad or warm towels on the pipe, starting near the faucet.
- No flames. Never use a torch, a propane or kerosene heater, or a grill to thaw a pipe.
- Find the main. Know where the main shutoff is in case the pipe has split.
Keep the rest from freezing
- Open the cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls.
- Let a faucet drip on the coldest side of the house.
- Keep the heat at the same setting day and night until the cold breaks.
